“Why do you like Disney cruises so much??”
It seems like I’ve been getting that question a lot lately and I’ve thought about the things I like about them such as the amazing service, but after further thought, I realized it came down to three things: family time, one-on-one time, and me time.
Thinking of Disney Cruise Line, family time is likely the first thought that comes to mind. After all, the commercials are full of smiling families and my family is no different. At home with my husband and me working different shifts plus our son having homework and other responsibilities, we rarely sit down for a meal as a family. On the ship, we have dinner together every night. We play bingo or join in a family trivia game or ride the AquaDuck. On Castaway Cay, we may ride bikes or go to the beach as a family. It’s like the cruise allows us to regroup and come back together as a family.
Disney Cruise Line allows us to take that reconnection a step further, however, because we also have great one-on-one time. While my son is hanging out at one of the amazing kids’ clubs, my husband and I can head to Palo or Remy, the adults-only restaurants, and go to the Broadway-style show or the movies. Sometimes, we order room service and simply sit on our verandah for dinner or we enjoy some of the adults-only entertainment in the lounges. When was the last time you and your spouse had a date night? Disney Cruise Line makes it easy to do.
One-on-one time isn’t just reserved for my husband and me, though. I’ve also found I get some great one-on-one time with my son. As he’s gotten older, I’ve come to cherish the memories we’ve made together on our cruises. One of my favorites is a Port Excursion we did in Jamaica. He and I climbed Dunn’s River Falls and also enjoyed riding the Jamaican bobsleds. Even if you have multiple kids, this is possible. I’ve been looking at Port Adventures for one of my clients, a single mom and two kids. In one port, she’s leaving one child in the Oceaneer Club and doing a Port Adventure with the other. In another port, she’s doing the opposite so she’s had the chance to not only spend one-on-one time with each child, but also do what they like to do since her children have very different likes and interests.
Finally, there’s the me time. How often do you get the time to relax and simply do something just for you without being worried about an interruption? My son has gotten older, but he still knocks on the door when I’m in the bath and has impeccable timing seeming to yell “MOM!” just as I’m getting to a good part in my book. Just this morning, he woke me up at 4:40am to kill a spider. While my son is in one of the kids’ clubs, my husband and I each enjoy our own versions of me time. He may be golfing in one of our ports of call, playing in one of the sports simulators on board, or getting a massage while I’m laying by the adults-only pool, sitting on my verandah reading, enjoying my own massage, going scuba diving in one of our ports of call, or quite simply taking a nap. Meanwhile, our son is also having fun as he nearly always makes friends on board and asks to go to the clubs or hang out with his new friends. It’s a win-win-win!
I guess what it really boils down to is one word – time. I have time to do things without life getting in the way. I have time to do things without worrying about things I need to do for work or for home. I have time to relax and enjoy my vacation instead of being on the go sightseeing. I have time to enjoy hanging out with my husband and son. I have time to recharge and come home relaxed and refreshed. I have yet to find another vacation “destination” or even another cruise line that allows me this freedom and gives me this feeling.
