Disney Magic at Home with Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Banana French Toast from Disney’s PCH Grill

Do you look at those amazing recipes from the theme parks or food bloggers coming out right now and laugh knowing you will never attempt it? If that describes you, then we are kindred spirits.

I look at them thinking I would love to make that and then begin reading. Piping bag and large star tip? Nope. Don’t have those. Ramekins and a butane blow torch? I may have those around here somewhere… and what on earth is a gelatin sheet and how would I go about getting one in the middle of a stay-at-home order when my grocery store doesn’t even have hamburger?

So, when I saw the Disney Parks Blog Post about the Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Banana French Toast from Disney’s PCH Grill, I almost kept scrolling. Almost. Then I realized that other than the challah bread, I already had everything I needed to make it.Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Banana French Toast from Disney’s PCH Grill - Toasting Bread

First, I did not get challah bread. It’s not easy to find near me, however, our local WalMart did have a beautiful loaf of uncut French bread so I used that instead. Also, I’m too impatient to wait for day old bread so I cut it up and dried it in my oven. I literally cut it up into the 1″ pieces and threw it in a 350 degree oven for about 5 minutes. This way it was dry enough to soak up all the yummy wet ingredients.

Other than that, I followed the recipe. I filled a bowl with the bread pieces, 2 sliced bananas, and 1/4 cup chocolate chips. My mixing bowl barely held it all!

Then, I put 6 eggs, 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter, 3/4 cup lowfat chocolate milk, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt in my blender and blended it until smooth.

I also let it sit for a few minutes to allow the liquid to soak into the bread (thanks, Food Network!) and then stirred gently a little more. Then, I poured the mixture into a 9 x 13 baking pan that I had already sprayed with olive oil cooking spray. Finally, I popped in my oven that was preheated to 350 degrees.

After 35 minutes, this is what I took out of the oven.

This is what Disney’s looks like in their blog post.

Pretty close, I think. Regardless, it tasted amazing and will make a great breakfast or dessert addition in my house.

Want to make it yourself? Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 8 thick slices day-old challah bread (I substituted French bread and dried it in oven)
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips (I used regular size, but it appears Disney uses mini)
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 6 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 3/4 cup low-fat chocolate milk
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Chocolate syrup and powdered sugar, optional

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Coat a 9x13x2-inch baking pan with nonstick spray. Set aside.
  2. Cut bread into 1-inch cubes and place in a large bowl. Slice bananas into 1/2-inch slices, and add to bowl. Stir in chocolate chips.
  3. Combine peanut butter, eggs, chocolate milk, cinnamon, and salt in a blender. Process until smooth.
  4. Pour egg mixture over bread mixture. Stir gently until bread cubes have absorbed egg mixture.
  5. Pour mixture into prepared baking pan. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until top is golden brown.
  6. Before serving, drizzle with chocolate syrup and dust with powdered sugar, if desired.

Thanks, Disney, for allowing us to cook up some of the Disney Magic at home!
